As luck would have it I have access to a "donor" machine tomorrow so I will copy the files and registry as you suggest and see where it gets me.

When you see Print Spooler, make sure that its checkbox is checked. Double-click the "Printer Spooler" service, and then change the startup type to "Automatic". I couldn't figure it out and then I found this. But if it is somehow disabled, you'll get this error message: "The local print spooler service is not running.
The printer is fine and so is the USB cable. that DID solve it and it is in easy to understand explanation.
